Katie Brock

You don't need to know what's wrong before you come to therapy.

You might know exactly what you want to talk about.

You might just know that something isn't working anymore.

Both are enough.

How I work

I don't believe therapy is about sitting opposite someone who has you all figured out.

My job isn't to tell you who you are. It's to pay very close attention while we work it out together.

Sometimes that means looking at the past. Sometimes it's about what happened on Tuesday. Often it's noticing the things you've become very good at not noticing.

I work relationally, which means what happens between us matters too. Therapy isn't something I do to you. It's something we make together.

There will be empathy and curiosity. There may also be challenge. And, where appropriate, humour.

Therapy can be serious without being solemn.

What people come with

AnxietyRelationshipsTrauma GriefAddictionShame Self-doubtPanicFamily difficulties Feeling stuck
“I don't really know. I'm just not okay.”

That's a perfectly good place to start. You don't need a diagnosis, a neat explanation or a particularly impressive crisis to justify coming to therapy.

Teenagers & young adults

Being young can be bloody difficult.

There is enormous pressure to know who you are while you're still working it out — to fit in but stand out, succeed but look effortless, be independent while still needing people.

For some young people, things become overwhelming. Anxiety, low mood, relationships, family difficulties, identity, school or university pressure can begin to take up far too much space.

Therapy gives them somewhere that belongs to them.

I don't report back, lecture or try to turn teenagers into more convenient versions of themselves. I get to know the person sitting opposite me.

About me

I'm Katie.

I trained as an integrative psychotherapist at Regent's University London after graduating from Bristol University, and have worked in private practice since 2017.

I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society.

But qualifications only tell you so much about a therapist.

I work from the belief that people rarely need another person telling them how they ought to feel, what they should have done, or who they should become.

They need somewhere they don't have to perform.

Somewhere they can say the thing they haven't said. Somewhere they can contradict themselves, change their mind, be furious, frightened, funny, ashamed or completely unsure.

I won't pretend to have all the answers.

I will be there while we look for yours.

What clients say

“Therapy with Katie was the best decision I've ever made. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking to understand their own behaviour, and that of others around them.”
“Katie has helped me find the tools to better understand myself, to start understanding and unpicking the roots of my emotions and beliefs, and to recognise my own behavioural patterns.”
“Katie's genuine passion and care for her clients is so rare to find. Her ability to listen, reflect and empower you is something I've never seen before.”

Perhaps it's time to talk.

You don't need to have worked out what you're going to say. That's partly what the first session is for.
